RFID is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

Mr. Johnson also explained that the workshop has become relevant because RFID is the much-touted system that enables data to be transmitted by a tiny portable device, called a tag, which is read by an RFID reader and processed according to the needs of a particular application.
ITREALMS Online recollects that analysts recently predicted that RFID will revolutionize areas of industry including supply chain management, security and mobile telecommunication services.
In addition, RFID is expected to play an important role in the realization of the Ubiquitous Network Society (UNS).
“All this will create a yet unquantified demand on telecommunication networks,” he said, stressing that currently, the market for RFID standards is extremely fragmented.
Special standards for certain limited fields of applications, he said, exist as well as quasi-proprietary or proprietary standards, just as many RFID applications still lack global standards for data formats, compatibility, interoperability, interference problems, personal information protection, authentication, key management and others.
The communications officer noted that the workshop would serve as a survey of the market in terms of standardization and identify new areas for work; it will also begin work on a standards roadmap and provide a starting point for coordination of future work.
The workshop is scheduled to center its discussions on present status of RFID technology and identify future trends, review current and future applications, services and business models leveraging networked RFIDs (NRFIDs), identify NRFID aspects relevant to telecommunications comprising services and network capabilities, architecture, QoS, performance, security.
Other issues participants would be discussing include analyzing how far existing standards could support NRFID applications and services, and identify where enhanced or new standards might be needed, identify elements for a roadmap for a standardization framework, including the clarification of the role of applicable Standards-Development Organizations (SDOs), forums and consortia.
