Globacom splashes N341.5m on subscribers, achieved 9m

AS part of its third year anniversary celebration, the second national operator (SNO), Globacom, has splashed a total of N341.5 million on its customers, just as its subscriber base clocked 9 million.

Also Globacom denied media reports that Vodacom South Africa, is making overture to buy over the majority shares of the company.

Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mr. Mohammed Jameel, disclosed this at a press briefing in Lagos, announced in addition the introduction of two key products, namely Glo Caller tunes and Glo Xcite.

He expressed appreciation to Nigerians for believing on the network, saying that they are determined to continue churning out innovative value added services.

“Let me thank all the Globacom subscribers for their support for the last three years,” he declared, even as he praised media, dealers, equipment suppliers such as Ericsson, Alcatel and Huawie among other partners.

According to him, there would also be third anniversary promo which he tagged, “Airtime for life” stressing that winners would get free air time for their lives.

Throwing more light on this, marketing specialist at Globacom, Mr. Emma Nasamu, said that the Glo caller tune would enable subscribers on the network to choose the tune of their choice which could be activated by them.

This, he said, is another first that Globacom is introducing, even as there are over 1000 tones to choose from.

On the Glo Xcite, he explained that it enables the streaming of upto date minute news on demand, entertainment and content provision via Wireless Access Protocol (WAP).

“The key feature is to bring fun to subscribers via mobile phone along with news and business information and enable the meeting of Glo Fone Pals,” he said and pointed out that the caller tune is being launched for now on the postpaid platform.

Further, Mr. Jameel said that these package were being offered to Glo subscribers in order to seek to reward them for their loyalty.

The multimillion naira offer, he said, has been designed to mark Globacom’s third anniversary, of which 70 loyal subscribers are expected to benefit.

In the anniversary promo, he said, that 10 subscribers each would win N1 million in a draw to be held at the end of November this year to round off the celebrations among subscribers who have been with Glo since inception, three years ago.

The second category of 10 subscribers will emerge from those who have been on the network for two years with each winning N750,000, with another 10 go in home with N500,000.

The remaining 40 winners, he said, will be chosen from those who activated their lines between August 29 this year and the draw date and they would go home with N250,000 each.

“We are overwhelmed by how Nigerians have come to see Glo as their own. This has been responsible for the phenomenal growth of our subscriber base and we will continue to empower and appreciate them,” he asserted.

In addition, the COO announced the free life airtime promotion offer of N200 for over 4,200 subscribers, monthly.

“This is Globacom’s appreciation for their loyalty to the network in its three years of business,” he said.

He equally denied recent media reports that Vodacom South Africa is making overture to acquire Globacom, saying that there must be an agreement between the buyer and seller for purchases to take effect.

It would be recalled that Globacom entered the nation’s GSM market as the last entrant and currently has over 9 million subscribers, while its license include GSM, international gateway, fixed line and online services.
