APEX telecom regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that base stations emission from the Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications platforms are under control.
Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, who spoke through an official, Mr. Chris Agha while evaluating the studies conducted by the commission on Celtel installations at the south south and south east regions of the country, said emissions from base stations of GSM operators in the country are well below prescribed limits set by NCC and international organisations standards on emission restrictions.
Speaking in Enugu, Ndukwe also said, NCC intermittently tackles issues of public concern as well as commission studies to verify claims by operators.
It would be recalled that despite growing periodic public anxiety over the safety of GSM base stations emissions, studies by local and international experts including such organisations as the World Health Organisation (WHO), GSM Association, the International Commission for Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), World Health Organisation International Electromagnetic Fields Project, United States-based Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Mobile manufacturers Forum and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, have stated that emissions associated with GSM BTS well within determined safe threshold for exposure to radio frequency energy.
The commission further observed that the complaint cannot be divorced from normal public uneasiness about emission and in some instances, the pursuit of economic compensation from operators.
Equally speaking, Head, Government Affairs at Celtel Nigeria, Mr. Osondu Nwokoro, enlightened that the telco’s adoption of NCC standard and international standards as benchmark is a testimony of its resolve to ensure the power emanating from its base stations remain too low to cause any negative health effect.
