Telecom in Nigeria: A role in the call for launch

Ozioma Akubueze

A book detailing developments in tele- communication services in Nigeria and the positive effect the sector has created in the economic activities in the country titled; “Telecom in Nigeria: A role in the call” will be launched on Monday, October 30, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), in Lagos.

The work, more of a book project is the brain child of Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, the General Manager of VGC Communications Limited, Lagos, an expert who has contributed much to the management of information technology in the country.

The book which had already been published in the United Kingdom by Alden Oxford, has eight chapters and captures an overview of the industry in Nigeria, its development, challenges as well as the transformation of the Nigeria telecommunication landscape from a mere 500,000 lines to over 20 million lines in a space of five years.

The book project which the author said touches “virtually all facets of our national life” as it concerns telephone which “has become the primary means of contact for an increasing number of Nigerians, irrespective of trade and status.”

He also said, that an increasing number of economic activities now depend on telecommunication services to thrive.

The book also provides an insight into the “associated difficulties with service provision, network roll-out and maintenance of network infrastructure” in Nigeria.

Mr. Adebayo equally said that the book will be a handbook for service providers, professionals in IT, associated business as well as users of telecom even as he contended that it would widen the scope of IT knowledge of Nigerians.

He further implored interested persons to visit www.telecominnigeria.com, while comments could be sent to author@telecominnigeria.com.
