VIA unveils PC initiative for Nigeria

Remmy Nweke

Taiwan-based leader in silicon chip technologies and Personal Computer (PC) platform solutions, VIA Technologies Incorporated, has announced plans to commence a nation-wide mass computerization scheme in collaboration with local software content providers in the country.

Business Development manager, VIA Technologies at Middle East and Africa, Mr. Werner Du Plessis, revealed this while chatting with newsmen in Abuja recently.

He said that the concept was borne out of VIA’s desire to offer Nigerians truly indigenous computers that are affordable.

Mr. Du Plessis informed that the company intends to deploy full stream its PC-1 initiative into the country with its complete range of pc-1 power saving computing devices.

“Our mission with the pc-1 initiative, is to create a process whereby the target of achieving computer access for the next one billion digital-have-nots will be actualized by the year 2015” he said, stressing, “and we are not opposed to every other avenue that can help achieve that target in a country like Nigeria”.

One of such avenues identified by Mr. Du Plessis include the kick-start of a mass computerization scheme in collaboration with the government, which will see pc-1 power saving computers made available to Nigerians bundled with low cost indigenous Linux open-source Operating System that supports multiple Nigerian local languages.

With the proposed scheme currently receiving the interest of the National IT Development Agency (NITDA), VIA is poised to use the new project to expand the success of the pc-1 initiative in the country. At the moment, the VIA pc-1 range of computing devices, which includes desktops, laptops and thin clients, are currently being supplied in Nigeria through Juniper Solutions limited, under the brand name GENIAC.

VIA Technologies, Inc is a company quoted at the Taiwan stock exchange and has been fabless supplier of market-leading core logic chipsets, low power x86 processors, advanced connectivity, multimedia, networking and storage silicon, and complete platform solutions that are driving system innovation in the PC and embedded markets.
