JUST last week, there was an electronic mail (e-mail) making the rounds and threatening Yahoo! account users to fill certain information being requested by the sender if they were not to be removed from Yahoo services.
The mail purportedly from: mailcenter.services08@yahoo.com with the sender’s name ‘Yahoo Mail Center’ while the subject was: Yahoo!!! Unused Account Removal Confirm Your Account.
According to the mail, all new Yahoo users must be a part of it to avoid their Yahoo account being closed.
The sender said that the requested information was for verification of the user account and invited the recipient to read more below for his or her benefits.
“Due to the congestion in all Yahoo users and removal of all unused Yahoo Accounts, Yahoo would be shutting down all unused accounts, you will have to confirm your e-mail by filling out your login Info below after clicking the reply button, or your account will be suspended within 24 hours for security reasons.
“* Username: .... * Password: .... * Date of Birth: .... * Country Or Territory: .....
“After following the instructions in the sheet, your account will not be interrupted and will continue as normal. Thanks for your attention to this request. We apologize for any inconvenience.
“Warning!!! Account owner that refuses to update his or her account before two weeks of receiving this warning will lose his or her account permanently.
But our investigations showed that Yahoo! is not carrying out any such verification for now and if at all it has to, the wording of the email was simply fraudulent and intimidating for an average Internet user.
Industry watchers also said that there is no corporate organisation that commands the kind of respect Yahoo has currently that would even use words the way it sounded in the mail such as suspending an account within 24 hours.
Second is that if there is any anthom of the truth in such mail, it would be a news affair not selectively send to some Yahoo users, including old users.
However, Internet users and specifically the Yahoo account owners should be very careful in disclosing their email details, mostly at public Internet cafes.
