Galaxy orders 250 VSAT

The federal government owned Galaxy Backbone (GBB) Plc has ordered 250 Very Small Aparture Terminals (VSAT) as part of its National Information, Communication and Education Programme (NICEP), reports Charles Okoh.

NICEP is designed to deploy 5,000 VSAT nodes all over the 36 states and 774 local governments including government ministries, departments and agencies.

Marketing and Corporate Communications manager, GBB, Mr. Franklyn Ginger Eke, said that the order is part of the FG desire to provide connectivity and transversal services to its Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) and to facilitate digital inclusion of rural and under-served communities and locations in Nigeria.

He also said that this order is expected to have arrived the country because it was air-freighted last weekend and would be delivered before this week runs off considering all logistics.

Mr Eke in a press statement made available to Champion Infotel said that NICEP infrastructure is based on Internet Protocol (IP) technology, will support the entire spectrum of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services, focusing especially on such initiatives as e-Government, e-Education, e-Health, e-Commerce among others and will be connected directly to the Government Data Centre in Abuja.

He further said the NICEP pilot testing which started in the last quarter of 2007, with sites spread across the six geo-political zones of the country and some locations in federal universities, post offices, unity schools and security agencies, would be completed this month.
