Starcomms wins WhiteHat award

Starcomms Plc has won the White Hat award by Spamhaus for its efforts at fighting Internet crimes and zero tolerance on spam mails, reports HELEN OHANUSI.

The White Hat status of Starcomms is considered a giant stride in West Africa by industry watchers, given the fact that 419 and related internet scams have been social drawbacks in the perception of the international community which is the biggest telecommunications consumer market in the sub-region.

The award came at the heel of the company’s expansion of its iZAP, the much taunted super fast broadband data service to more cities in addition to the availability of its 1x Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) data service across the nation.

This, the telecom operator said, has gained it recognition, as the network of preference in internet provision in the country.

The Spamhaus project, an international non-profit organization, was founded in 1998 and is run by a dedicated 26 investigators and forensics specialists located in 10 countries, but its central bases of operations are in Geneva, Switzerland and London, UK.

The mission of the Spamhaus project, apart from tracking the internet’s spam operations, is to also provide dependable real time anti-spam protection for internet networks, to work with the law enforcement agencies.

In addition, Spamhaus focuses on identifying and pursuing spammers worldwide, while lobbying government for effective anti-spam legislation.

The achievement of the company is further heightened by the fact that Starcomms also an internet service provider in the country, therefore, goes a long way in changing the negative perception of Nigeria by international community for good.

Starcomms prides itself as industry in providing triple-play services with top on the list being its iZAP offer, while claiming the first to deployed Evolution Data Only (EVDO) services in Lagos and Port Harcourt, and Abuja.
