Meltdown: MTN Nigeria lays off 65

A total of 65 personnel of the leading mobile company in the country, MTN Nigeria, have been laid off.

This, the company said was in effort to aggressively refocus its customer service operations towards the next generation customer care.

A press statement from MTN Nigeria endorsed by the Human Resources Executive, MTN Nigeria, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola, confirmed this development.

She quoted the Customer Relations Executive, Mr. Akin Braithwaite, as saying that in line with the telco’s strategy, 65 staff of MTN Nigeria have been disengaged sequel to a series of internal reviews to better position the organization to serve its customers for the future.

Mr. Braithwaite, also said that MTN Nigeria has invested over N4.5 billion in state-of-the-art technology that supports a world class customer service.

Pointing out that the planned additional expenditure on customer care in 2010 is worth about N25 billion, which includes the cost of new call centers pan Nigeria.

“These will create about 1,500 new jobs,” he said.

Additionally, Mrs. Oyagbola, affirmed that the management had approved an exit package for all concerned to cushion the effect.

In a related development, MTN SA, a fortnight ago, announced its plans to reduce permanent and temporary workforce as a result of the decline in the economic environment.

Ms Bridget Bhengu of MTN SA Communications department, confirmed this penultimate Monday in a press statement said that approximately 403 permanent employees may be affected towards the end of March next year, which comprises about 7 per cent of MTN SA’s 4,679 permanent employees.
