Leading public sector-based Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure provision company, Galaxy Backbone, Nigeria, has bagged a prize at the 2009 edition of Beacon of ICT award, which took place in Lagos recently.
The event according to the organizers was created to honor the talents, contributions and commitment of individuals and organizations that have made notable contributions within the Nigerian ICT industry.
Also, the event attracted who-is-who in ICT industry including the immediate past Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, Director General, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr. Yomi Bolanrinwa, former Minister of Communications Air Vice Marshall Canice Umenwaliri (Rtd) amidst other notables in the sector and representatives of other government agencies.
The organizers noted that Galaxy Backbone was chosen based on online votes casted by thousands of Nigerians made up of consumers of ICT products and services, the industry, media and the general public.
Equally, the citation read during the ceremony stated that since coming on board in 2007 as a special purpose ICT vehicle of the government, Galaxy Backbone Plc, has changed the ICT landscape for good, especially through its 1-GOV.net services platform which was introduced to significantly enhance the adoption of ICT in the public sector for the efficient delivery of public services and cost effectiveness.
Responding after receiving the award, the Manager, Corporate Communications, Galaxy Backbone, Mr. Franklyn Ginger-Eke, said they find it extremely humbling to be honoured with the award amongst giants in the ICT industry.
“In about three years of our corporate existence, the name Galaxy Backbone has become synonymous with the delivery of superior ICT solutions and services. This award challenges us towards ensuring that we meet and exceed our customers and stakeholders expectations through the provision of pervasive ICT infrastructure services that positively impact national development” he declared.
Galaxy Backbone Plc is a public enterprise of the Federal Government established in 2006 to provide a common platform for the provision of ICT connectivity and transversal services to the Federal Government Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).
The company is currently offering consultancy and project management services to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Global Communications Network Project which involves the provision of secure hosted messaging and collaboration services with voice, video and data communication capability to Nigerian missions in over 100 countries across Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia. A similar project is being implemented for the Nigerian Army Wide Area Network that positions ICT as the pivot for the transformation of the Army into an efficient and modern military institution and covers internet connectivity for the Nigerian Army headquarters connected via fibre-optic link and its remote locations connected by VSAT as well as other value added services like video conferencing to it divisions across the country.
