Omatek is superior to foreign brands – Akunyili

Federal Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. (Mrs) Dora Akunyili has lauded the management of Omatek Computers for giving Nigerians a superior brand of computers against all odds.

Akunyili made this declaration while visiting Omatek factory in Opebi-Ikeja, Lagos, last weekend, saying that its superior to foreign brands because they are made with the Nigerian climate in mind.

“As far as I am concerned, computers made in Nigeria are superior to those made in England and America because they are not adaptable to our environment and Omatek is one of them,” she declared.

Akunyili stressed that this is more so when one buys the so-called foreign brands of computers and once the air-conditioner is not working, they break down easily.

“… But this particular ones – Made-in-Nigeria - would not breakdown because local manufacturers have taken into consideration this fact and Omatek is one of them,” she reiterated.

She explained that market research has shown that what the big companies like Dell and HP indicate that no one company produces the entire personal computer hardware.

“I am more concerned that Omatek computers are meant for the environment with three fans because of our hot environment; one at the motherboard, one on the casing and another at the power supply,” she said.

Akunyili noted that they also have a system of testing the computers and subjecting them to a very high sensitive environment to make sure that “our hot weather would not affect it negatively.”

After all the efforts, she wondered how any well meaning Nigerian would buy foreign computers against locally manufactured PCs.

She, therefore, pleaded with Nigerians to patronize their own products, especially the computers.

“Please buy made in Nigerian computers and Omatek is one of them,” she asserted.

According to her, when Nigerians patronize made in Nigerian products and computers particularly, they empower local manufacturers like Omatek, who would in turn provide jobs to the youths, thereby reducing the rate of unemployment in the country, whereas enhancing the security of the nation.

“When, we buy made in Nigeria computers we empower local computer manufacturers and they provide jobs for our children and the unemployment would reduce as security is enhanced,” she said.

On why she made the visit, Akunyili pointed out that before now Omatek team has been coming to office and has in fact been working with the Ministry ever before she assumed office to make presentations on power-point and even extended an invitation to us to come and see firsthand what they are doing.

“… That is why I am here today. I am particularly proud that I came because what she has been showing us is much less what they are doing here and I am glad it’s being managed by a woman,” she enthused.

In her comment, the Group Managing Director (GMD) Omatek Plc, Mrs. Florence Seriki said that they were delighted to receive the Minister and her entourage to the factory in Lagos, noting that Omatek factory in Ghana is also doing well and these two factories are to serve the West African market.
