Intel, Shell lifts Science Students fair

Intel Nigeria has extended its commitment to the development of science in secondary schools in the country.

This is coming as the world’s biggest chip maker partnered with Shell Corporation and the Initiative for Sustainable Educational Development (ISED) in the sponsorship of the 7th National
Festival of Schools Sciences and quiz competition.

The annual 3-day event brings together hundreds of talented science students from different parts of Nigeria.

This year’s edition hosted at the Government Junior Secondary School, Jabi, Abuja, had participants from 60 schools across 20 states of the six geo-political zones to showcase their scientific talents and compete for the big prize which includes an all-expense paid trip to Los
Angeles, United States, in May to participate at the global level of the science fair.

Speaking to journalists at the event, Corporate Affairs Group Director, Intel Africa, Joseph Nsengimana said the annual fair was designed to offer a platform for students to demonstrate their mastery of the sciences and as well exhibit their creativity.

“The programme is aimed at encouraging young people to take a keen interest in the sciences and mathematics particularly in today’s technology-driven world; it is indeed a platform for the discovery of future scientists,” he said.

According to him, the 2011 edition marks a step forward in the effort to promote mathematics and science, as well as foster innovation that will in the long run fast track development of education in Nigeria and across Africa.

“The students exhibiting great talent, intelligence and innovation are the future of Nigeria as the youth constitutes a majority of the country’s population. This, he added, signals a brighter future for the nation and continent. As such, in the 21st century such cerebral students should not be limited by geography,” he advised.

He further said Intel is genuinely committed to supporting platforms that can develop science and technology education among college students in Nigeria, noting that this was responsible for the resources committed to actualize the course.

“We are offering Nigerian students and future leaders a golden opportunity to compete with their colleagues on a global scale at the 52nd edition of the international fair,” he said.
