NCC plans emergency, e-learning centres in Delta

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is to site one of its Emergency Communications Centre (ECC) to handle emergency calls and a Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) Learning Centre in the state for the training of manpower for the communications industry in the country.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Juwah made this disclosure at the weekend while on official visit to the Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Juwah who led a team of NCC management team to Delta State, assured of the Commission’s plan to build an Emergency Communications Centre (ECC) to handle emergency calls and a
Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) Learning Centre in the state for the training of manpower for the communications industry at Asaba.

He also urged Delta State government to key into all NCC programmes and take advantage of them for the benefit of the people of State.

On DBI, Dr. Juwah explained that the institute being developed as a centre of excellence is fully funded by the Commission to address the dearth of manpower which bedeviled the industry at the advent of mobile technology in the country.

With main campus in Abuja, he said, DBI has facilities in Lagos and Kano while work will soon commence in three other centres to be sited in Asaba, Yola and Enugu.

Further, Dr Juwah explained the mandate of NCC is to take communications to the various ends of the country, and promised that his administration would address outstanding issues in the industry.

Speaking at the occasion, the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan promised to work with the current management of NCC.

He said that the pledge to work closely with NCC, to enable Delta State develop its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) vision, describing it as the basic infrastructure for the socio political transformation of the state.

Commending the SIM Card Registration by the NCC, Uduaghan said, that it will help reduce criminality in the country.

“I am one of the happiest persons in the country because SIM Card Registration has started and it will reduce criminality. The exercise will help us in dealing with criminality,” the Governor said,

Uduaghan equally said that he was personally surprised that he bought a SIM Card recently and found out that he could only do emergency calls as the card was not registered, noting that such development was good for the health and safety of the country.

Delighted Uduaghan went on to remark that the activities of the Commission in the state will compliment his administration’s effort to build an ICT Park for the transformation of the state.

“We are developing an ICT Park in Asaba here; that is why I am happy about your projects. We will key into your programmes and take advantage of them for the benefit of our people,” he said.

Governor Uduaghan congratulated Juwah who was making his maiden visit to the state, and noted that the EVC, by his background and practice, has a wide experience in the communications industry which he will bring to bear at the NCC, adding that at the end Nigeria will be richer for it.

Achieving a successful e-learning initiative can alleviate problems in Nigeria's education system, but with the problems in infrastructure and the erratic power supply situation, it's not an easy task. I hope to see Nigerian youths and students getting benefits from the program.
