San Francisco agog for global 40th Internet meeting

The city of San Francisco, California in the United States is witnessing inflow of Internet stakeholders who are attending the 40th public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) also tagged Silicon Valley Meeting 2011.

ICANN is the global body of stakeholders charged with the co-ordination of the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and administration through its Internet Assigned Name Authority (IANA) among other departments.

ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It also promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers, but does not claim control of content on the Internet.

Although ICANN It cannot stop spam or deal with access to the Internet, its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, does have an important influence on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.

The meeting commenced with hundreds of registered participants from across the global including Africa, Asia pacific, America, and Europe among other continents.

The ICANN 40th Public Meeting in Silicon Valley, San Francisco is a week-long event scheduled from March, Sunday 13 through 18, this year.

The meeting took off for early birds on Sunday with five sessions including that of At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) and Regional Leadership Working Session-1; Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) Working Session; WHOIS Policy Review Team; ccNSO Tech Day 1 in Cooperation with Domain Name System (DNS) Operations, Analysis and Research Center as well as a closed session of Delegation and Re-delegation Working Group Meeting.

Source at ICANN said that the session where fully enable for remote participation so as to encourage those who could not make it to the event or session due to circumstances beyond their controls.

Issues expected to be addressed during the 40th public meeting of ICANN made available to ITRealms Online showed there would be a policy update, new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) basics, formal welcome by ICANN leadership, discussion for beginners on Domain Name System Security (DNSSEC), framework on the Fiscal Year budget for 2012 and All Things New gTLD to name a few.

Day 1, Monday, would be rounded off with the NARALO showcase to be addressed by one of the living fathers of the Internet, Mr. Vint Cerf, dwelling on ‘Amplifying the values of civil society’.

It was further gathered that ICANN has made arrangements for the remote participation to be really active by providing audio cast for low and high bandwidth.

Reputed as home region to many of the world's largest technology companies including Apple, Cisco, Google, HP, Intel and Oracle, the Silicon Valley is in the southern San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California in the United States.
