Starcomms roots for DigitalSENSE forum on Internet Governance 2011

STARCOMMS plc, one of the nation’s Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) leading operators has thrown its weight behind the Nigeria DigitalSENSE forum coming up on Thursday, March 24 at the Golden Gate Ikoyi-Lagos.

The Nigeria DigitalSENSE forum focuses on Internet Governance and development in the country in relation to the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) which would be this year hosted by Kenya in Nairobi in the last quarter.

Confirming this, the public relations manager, Starcomms, Mr. David Babalola said that the management of the mobile operator took the decision to back the forum due to extraordinary success recorded in the last two editions.

According to him, the feedback Starcomms received was overwhelming regarding the ever-increasing number of Nigerians who are well disposed to take active part at the forum.

“its openness was very encouraging both in terms of discussion and participation” he said, stressing that was why Starcomms have to take that advantage to educate and enlighten Internet related issues to its customers.

In addition, he said, the forum would afford Starcomms the privilege of bringing its avalanche of Internet products nearer to the Nigerian telecom consumers, such as its award-wining Izap among others.

In her response, the Executive Director, DigitalSENSE Africa, the organizers of the Nigeria DigitalSENSE forum series, Mrs. Nkemdilim Nweke, commended Starcomms for taking the right step.

She urged other operators who have not yet subscribed to the opportunity offer by DigitalSENSE forum to do so as the deadline approaches from accepting participant who intend to exhibit products and services at the occasion.

Also, she said that there are several other options for support and sponsorship available at the event as the predicted that participants for 2011 would definitely grow beyond the magic of last year, where the venue was filled to the brim.

Talks are on with more operators, which have reached advanced stages to grace the event in ground style, noting that this year’s theme: Internet Governance and Broadband Evolution in Nigeria would have the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Dr. Eugene Juwah, while the Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. Labaran Maku and his counterpart in Science and Technology Prof. Muhammad Abubakar Ka’oje are the special guests of honour at the event.

She also disclosed that the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola would lead the state delegation to the Nigeria DigitalSENSE forum as chief host accompanied by his Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Obafemi Hamza among others, even as the former president, Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) and chief executive of Teledom Group, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem would preside at the 2011 edition.

She recalled that Starcomms internet service has been stable amidst challenged being experienced by other operators and assured participants of exciting sessions this year.

Starcomms Plc, Nigeria’s 4th largest telecommunications operator and leading “triple-play” in the mobile, fixed wireless voice, wireless broadband provision, is quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange having since July 14, 2008.

The CDMA operator is the first telecommunications operator in Nigeria to be listed on the domestic Exchange. Starcomms commenced operations in 1990 with a customer base of less than 2,000, at the end of December 2010, the network had crossed over 2 million subscribers; making it the 4th largest telecommunications operator and largest CDMA 3G Mobile network in the country. It is also the first CDMA 3G network to cross the one million subscriber base in Nigeria.
