Chief Monitoring Officer, Lagos Zone at the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mrs. Dorothy Chuka-Odom, has called on subscribers of pay-TV and terrestrial to complain when they do not get value for money, reports CHARLES OKOH.
Speaking at the Digital Satellite Television (DStv) consumer forum in Lagos, last week, Chuka-Odom admonished Nigerians for being too laid-back when their rights are being infringed upon.
She commended MultiChoice for the initiative, describing it as a welcome development in the pay-TV sector of the industry.
She also said it is the duty of NBC to regulate the broadcasting industry in Nigeria and monitor all the channels on direct-to-home (DTH) and terrestrial televisions.
“Customers have the right to complain over what is served to them on television, be it DTH or terrestrial,” she said.
She urged the subscribers present at the forum to always route their complaints concerning DTH and terrestrial television operators through the Commission for immediate response.
Speaking at the forum, Head of Corporate Communications, MultiChoice Nigeria, Mr. Segun Fayose, while welcoming customers, stated that the objective of the forum is to thank subscribers for their loyalty; listen to their suggestions, advice and complaints, which are constructive feedback necessary for MultiChoice’s effective operation; and to explore ways of improving service delivery.
He revealed that SuperSport has won the right to air the UEFA Champions League beginning from next seasons, adding that subscribers do not need to pay double subscription to watch both the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
He listed a number of innovations introduced in the recent past by MultiChoice to add value to DStv subscribers to include addition of over 20 new channels; introduction of high definition personal video recorder (HD PVR) decoder; introduction of multiple payment platforms; opportunity for online real-time feedback through DStv Facebook and Twitter pages; and the recently-launched Drifta, a mini mobile decoder from DStv Mobile.
“SuperSport has won the right to show the two most competitive leagues in the world from August. There are many exciting productions from our sister companies M-Net and Super Sport to enjoy from time to time on DStv,” he said.
Some of these, he listed to include the ongoing Big Brother Amplified; 100 per cent Nigeria-made multi-camera soap opera, Tinsel; SuperSport’s Naija Made, a magazine programme that documents activities in the Nigeria Football League and other sports; the forthcoming Glo Naija Sings, among others.
He also promised to give feedback from the forum to the management of MultiChoice with the hope that some of their suggestions would be considered in future plans.
DStv subscribers who attended the forum which held at Agege area of Lagos commended MultiChoice for the initiative and called for its sustenance.
Issues raised at the forum included how to resolve the challenge of a faulty decoder, migration from one bouquet to another, consideration for the possibility of using scratch card for DStv subscription payment, introduction of toll-free customer care line, hard-booting/scanning of decoder and loss of signal during rains and how to properly install DStv equipment, among others.
The MultiChoice executives at the forum, which include Branch Coordinator, MultiChoice, Ikeja Office, Mr Faud Kadiku; Regional Sales Manager, South West, Mr Ade Adenuga, MultiChoice Nigeria; MultiChoice Superdealer and CEO, Radac Communications Limited, Mr Ifeanyi Onyibo.
The event also saw Mr Adebayo Damilola emerging the lucky winner of a DStv HD PVR decoder raffle draw.
