Ndukwe, MTN applaud ICT Alliance

Immediate past chief regulator of telecommunications, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe and management of MTN Nigeria Communications Limited have applauded the plans by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) publishers’ alliance to celebrate the 10 years of mobile connectivity in the country.

Ndukwe while welcoming members of this group during a courtesy visit on arrangements for the 10th anniversary of telecoms revolution in the country, described telecoms liberalization as one of the areas the government got its bearings right.

He tasked the government to demonstrate the same will power in the power sector so that the nation’s economy would be evenly developed before it gets too late to bridge the gap.

Ndukwe also affixed the successes on a number of factors including liberalisation, independence of NCC, non interference by government in the operations of NCC and willpower by government to implement a private sector-led telecoms industry.

He further described the 10 years of mobile connectivity as one of the defining points for Nigeria’s economic growth which should be replicated in the power sector, noted that if the same approach had been applied to the liberalization of the power sector, Nigeria’s energy challenge would have long been addressed.

Equally, MTN Nigeria has shown support for the one-day event on ‘A Decade of GSM Forum’ slated to hold this August 2011, being put together by the group in association with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).

Speaking through the General Manager Corporate Communications, Mrs. Funmi Omogbenigun said Nigeria’s mobile connectivity feat highlights the tremendous growth potential in Africa’s largest country.

MTN Nigeria, she said, is glad to have contributed its quota in the growth, noting that MTN Group was recently recognized as the top corporate brand in Africa at the fourth BrandFinance Global Nation Brands League Awards.

According to the organizers of BrandFinance the award also puts MTN on the Top 500 Global Brands List as the only African brand on that prestigious list.

Chairman of the alliance, Mr. Aaron Ukodie said the group was designed to promote a unifying ground among media entrepreneurs focusing on the ICT genre and solicited for support of the industry to ensure the success of the forum.

He listed some members of the Alliance to comprise the premier media organisations focusing exclusively on the ICT sector, including IT & Telecom Digest, eWorld, Communication Weekly, IT Edge News.Com, IT World, and eBusiness Life.
