NomCom receives 15 statements for ALAC

A total of fifteen statements of interest were received from the North American citizens, as the period ends for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Nominating Committee recruitment period for the At-Large Advisory Committee.

ITRealms Online gathered that on Monday last week, the nomination period closed for the ALAC representative from the North American region, for an interim vacancy to be filled this year by the 2011 Nominating Committee (NomCom).

A press statement made available to ITRealms Online by Director Global Media Affairs at ICANN, Mr. Brad White, stated that the 2011 NomCom received 15 Statements of Interest from North American citizens for this purpose.

The 2011 NomCom, he explained, would collect information and evaluate the candidates through mid-August 2011 before due diligence check of the selected candidate will follow.

“The successful candidate will be announced as soon as possible thereafter and will take up the position immediately,” he said.

He said that ICANN’s mission is to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet.

“To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other,” he said.

Stressing that ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world, without which there would be no one global Internet.

ITRealms Online recalls that ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable.

“It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers,” he said.

Therefore, he said, ICANN does not control content on the Internet and cannot stop spam as well as doesn’t deal with access to the Internet.

“But through its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet,” he said.
