ISPON extends software contest deadline

Despite the warning strike by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), students are scrambling for the on-going national software competition.

The software contest is being organized by the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), just as the deadline has been extended by seven days.

Chairman, Public Relations and Communications Committee, ISPON, Mr. Moses Braimah, confirmed this at the weekend, saying that the issue of who wins the National Software Innovation Cup 2011, has become the hottest news across the campuses nationwide.

According to him, over 32 schools are currently moving quickly to outsmart one another to compete for the National Software Innovation Cup.

He listed some schools that have filed in to include the University of Calabar, Calabar; University of Uyo, Uyo; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho; Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye; Delta State University, Abraka; Cross Rivers State University of Technology, Calabar; The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Uyo City Polytechnic; Federal Polytechnic, Offa; Yaba College of Technology, Yaba; Federal Polytechnic, Idah; while others are making frantic efforts to beat the submission deadline.
The decision by ISPON NEC and the judges to extend the submission date by seven days was in response to pleas from contenders at various schools to enable them complete the documentation of their applications for the competition.

“Also, as at the time the entry opened many of the universities were yet to start the new academic session” he explained.

The 2011 edition, he said, is being sponsored by Cross Rivers State Government, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), MTN, NigComSAT, Visafone, NCC and others.

As said by him, the ISPON’s first national software conference would take place at Tinapa Business Resort, Calabar between 27 and 28 October, 2011.
