BCN manages largest fibre infrastructure in FCT – Dikko

Chief executive officer of Broadband Connectivity Nigeria (BCN) Limited, Mr. Ibrahim Dikko has said that his firm is building a long distance and metropolitan-based fibre optic infrastructure and is currently manages the largest fibre optic network in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

Speaking at the weeklong Idlelo5 conference which opened at the Shehu Musa Yar Adau Centre, Abuja on Tuesday, in a good will message, he said that BCN strategy is to build this infrastructure for the open cyber grazing of innovative ideas, products, services and opportunities.

He underlined the notions of freedom of access, freedom of knowledge and freedom to engage in constructive activities towards actualizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs0 for the betterment of mankind which underlines open source thinking.

Also, he noted that BCN pioneered FTTX – optical fibre and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy network infrastructure development in the country.

“We manage the largest fibre optic network in the Federal Capital Territory,” he declared.

Dikko equally said that BCN is presently upgrading its optical fibre network to Gigabyte Passive Optic Network (GPON), while simultaneously expanding and deploying new metropolitan and long distance networks across the country.

He, therefore looks forward to partnering with members of the Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA), especially through its Nigerian affiliate, the Open Source Foundation of Nigeria (OSFON) for the collective benefit of the populace.

As said by him, BCN understands that its customers does not pay precisely for its infrastructure, but for the solutions to their own real life challenges that BCN infrastructure supports.

“Thus, we are all in a symbiotic relationship. We need each other,” he said.

Dikko further affirmed the support of BCN for the on-going process to create a National Communication Infrastructure and the deployment of a National Fibre Optic Backbone.

He emphasized that the business of infrastructure is a long-term business that requires long-term funds, strategies and continuity of pragmatic and well thought through policies.

Dikko commended the minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson for listening to infrastructure providers and other stakeholders.

“We pray for her success, because we believe that her success is our collective success,” he said.
