ICANN to unveil new Generic Top-Level Domain applicants April 30

Rod Beckstrom, outgoing president, ICANN
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has set April 30 for the unveiling of its new Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) applicants.

Director of Global Media Affairs, Mr. Brad White who confirmed this development to ITRealms Online said that the target date would be for the release of applications list for the new generic top-level domains, specifying who has applied for which domain names.

The outgoing President and chief executive officer of ICANN, Mr. Rod Beckstrom was quoted as saying that the plan had always been to publish the list of applied-for strings approximately two weeks after the close of the April 12 application window.

“Setting a target date gives people the opportunity to plan for this highly anticipated event,” he declared.
Beckstrom also noted that if ICANN receives an overwhelming number of applications to process, publication of the list of strings could be postponed.

ITRealms Online recalls that ICANN’s mission is to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet, noting that in order to reach another person on the Internet every Internet user has to type an address into their computer or a device; a name or a number.

ICANN explained that that address has to be unique so computers to know where to find each other, therefore, ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world, which means that without coordination there would be no one global Internet.

Formed in 1998, ICANN is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable.
