Education researcher, Xavier Gray has disclosed that a career in computer
sciences is worth $80,180, about N12.8m annually with first degree.
In a Career Guide made available to ITRealms,
Gray, who currently works with Open Education Database, said his research
provides a comprehensive look at a variety of career fields to include as many
resources for potential students to explore their career options.
He also said that a total of 3,578,220 computer science majors are
employed country-wide in the United States alone.
Average salary in computer science careers in US, he said is about
$80,180 annually.
Each section of the guide, Gray said, provides an overview of the most
popular jobs, related degrees and free courses, and pertinent employment
statistics for each career.
Gray pointed
out that Computer science is one of today’s top majors, according to the
Princeton Review, adding that with new technological innovations driving up the
demand for skilled scientists, computer science majors have a number of
exciting career opportunities open to them, in anything from cloud computing to
mobile application development.
In addition, he
said, many computer science jobs are seeing significant growth due to
businesses and organizations increasing their reliance on technology to
advertise their products and services.
Further, he
said, careers in computer science may also bring in a high salary, which makes
the field a popular area of study for undergraduates and graduates alike.
As said by
him, in the 2009-2010 school year alone, about 128,318 bachelor’s degrees,
57,299 master’s degrees, and 9,370 doctoral degrees were awarded in the field
of computer science, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
The U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), he said, reports that professionals earned a
median pay of about $100,660 annually with a doctoral degree in 2010.
He pointed out
that however, that the computer scientist job outlook is not limited to
doctoral researchers within the field. Stressing that software developers and
computer systems administrators careers are also experiencing fast growth and
high salaries.
“Cutting-edge
fields like big data, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics are also new
frontiers that will need computer science majors to help lead the way,” he
declared.
Gray listed some of the fastest growing jobs
for Computer Science majors to include Computer and Information Systems Manager,
Computer Hardware Engineer, Computer Programmer, Computer Support Specialist,
Computer Systems Analyst, Database Administrator, Network and Computer Systems
Administrator, Software Developer, Software Engineer, and Web Developer
While related degrees, he outlined to include Computer
Engineering, Computer Support, Database Administration, Information Security
