The incoming
Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Mr. Houlin
Zhao of China has promised to work towards improved telecommunications and
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for a better life for all,
reports ITRealms.
Zhao in his
acceptance speech after his election as the incoming Secretary-General in
Busan, Korea-hosted ITU Plenipotentiary (PP-2014), made available to ITRealms expressed appreciation for what
he tagged “unanimously and enthusiastically” electing him as the new Secretary
General of the ITU.
This, he
told ITRealms entrusts him with the
honour of leading a beloved organization for the next four years.
“I sincerely
thank all of you for your confidence in me,” he asserted, extending his
appreciation to the government and people of China for his candidature.
“I would also like to thank the Vice Minister of MIIT, Mr. Liu Lihua, and the Chinese delegation to this PP-14, as well as to all Chinese friends who have worked hard to promote my candidature over the last two years,” he said, noting that his wife Aihua Jiang, has always assisted him in serving the ITU and is now here in this room together their son Peng to support him in person as well as all ITU staff and member states.

For the
outgoing leadership of ITU under Dr. Hamadoun Touré, Secretary General, Mr.
Zhao described him as a great son of Africa and his life friend and brother.
“I wish him
and his family all the best in the future,” he said, just as he did not left
out his newly elected colleague as Directors and hopes to have very enriching
experience to work with them.
He noted that ITU will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year, maintaining that ITU has demonstrated its ability to lead Telecom/ICT developments in the world.

Mr. Zhao emerged with 152 votes across 152 countries accredited for the
election of Secretary-General, the Director of the ITU's Radiocommunication
Bureau, Mr. François Rancy of France was elected with 166 votes; Director of
ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) Mr. Chaesub Lee of
Republic of Korea, emerged with 87 votes
Also, the
Director of ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau, Mr. Brahima Sanou of
Burkina Faso was elected 166 votes.
