Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), a Telecom infrastructure provider, set up by the government of India for the establishment, management and operation of National Optical Fibre, has begun laying cables in 335 gram panchayats, reports ITRealm
The national optical fibre network, under Centre's 'Digital
India' project, was described as a lifeline of rural areas’ future. It will provide
connectivity to 2,050,000 gram panchayats across India, said a director in
BBNL, Ratan Ghosh at a press conference recently.
"The project
will become a lifeline of rural areas in future. After telecommunication
services in villages, there is a need for data services as well to provide
villagers benefits of e-services," said Ghosh, adding that fibre laying
processing has started in 3018 blocks and 1,03,614 gram panchayats nationwide.
"In Madhya Pradesh 23,007 gram panchayats, including
335 in Indore division, cables will be laid," said Ghosh, adding that out
of 335 gram-panchayats, the project is almost complete in 178 and by April next
year the project will be completed and they will start providing services, ITRealms learnt.
According to Ghosh, the usage of IT service in villages will increase digital literacy, affordability, development of applications especially for services, which is needed in rural areas.

"Recently, we organized programmes about importance of
e-governance, e-education, e-health, e-commerce and e-agriculture in few
villages so as to make villagers familiar with these terms and know its
