NCC says Innjoo phones not approved in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has declared that Innjoo mobile phones currently on sale in Nigeria are not type approved, reports ITRealms.

Disclosing this, Head of Enforcement Unit, NCC, Mr Salisu Abdul, confirmed this during an enforcement exercise in Lagos, saying that they are on the trail of Innjoo Technology Ltd, a supply and sales firm, over non-type approval of telecommunications equipment, which he said, is criminal under the National Communication Act 2003

He also said NCC is yet to locate the office address of the Innjoo Technology and will not relent until due process is done.

Equally, Abdul said that NCC had written Innjoo since February to ``type approve’’ its phones, but all efforts proved abortive as the company refused to adhere to regulation.

As the regulator, he said that had the power to type approve any telecoms equipment brought into the country to ensure a sanitised industry. 

The type approval, he said, is necessary because the phones have to be in consonance with the networks in Nigeria

''Type approval test has to be done and certificate issued by the NCC,” he asserted.

Mr. Abdul pointed out that while NCC is exercising its monitoring powers, the Commission discovered that Innjoo Technology brought in some telecoms devices into the country, hence they were asked to bring them for type approval

''We have been corresponding with them in compliance with our transparency and fairness regulatory activity and they fail to submit these equipment for type approval. So in that regard, we are now trying to trace who is Innjoo in Nigeria and discovered that it is being represented by a legal practitioner; Fortress Solicitors, whose office is City Hall,'' he said. 

Abdul further said that Fortress Solicitors had refused to provide the address of Innjoo, even after being interrogated by the police. Stressing, the sale of non-type-approved telecoms equipment was a criminal offence, according to the provision of Section 131 of the Communication Act

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) equally quoted Abdul as saying investigation will continue until when Innjoo address is unveiled in order to enable the Commission confiscate the equipment to ensure compliance. 

“We want to sanitise the telecoms market to ensure that all equipment brought into the country is type approved for better quality of service,'' Abdul said, advised Nigerians to be conscious of the type of phones they buy as they affect the quality of services being received. 

Abdul also urged Nigerians to visit the commission's website to know the phones that were certified for the country.
