The Accra-based Association of
African Universities (AAU) in collaboration with Ashesi University has called
for volunteer young social media reporters for the 2015 African University Day,
ITRealms gathered.
Ms Nodumo Dhlamini of Association of
African Universities confirmed this to ITRealms, saying that this year AAU Secretariat
is experimenting on use of social media to create awareness about the African
University Day.
This innovative approach, she said,
would harness social media to create awareness and engage the higher education
community electronically through the use of likes of Twitter, Facebook, Youtube
and blogs.
“This approach aims to generate ‘noise
and excitement’ online about higher education in Africa and contribute towards
the advocacy role of the AAU,” she said.
As said by her, the roles of
Volunteer Young Social Media Reporters (VYSMR) include to work online to
retweet, like Facebook posts, share videos, share pictures, write blog articles
and re-post posts related to the AU Day.
“These volunteers will work online
from 13th October 2015 to 13th November 2015 – at least 30 minutes a day up to
11th November and 4 hours on 12th November2015,” she said, stressing that they
would be guided on what to tweet such as schedule of tweet and Facebook posts to
be shared with the reporters.
In addition, Dhlamini said, all the
15 volunteer-students would be selected from Ashesi University to support the
online campaign, but also participate in ‘onsite social media reporting’ on the
12th November 2015.
ITRealms equally gathered that the
hash tag #AUDay2015 would be used to tag all the posts to enable aggregation
and tracking of traffic about the 2015 African University Day.
While tweeting or liking posts
social media reporters will be encouraged to mention universities in Africa and
hopefully create awareness on and promote these universities as well.
All selected volunteer social media
reporters from Ashesi University would be expected to follow AAU social media
platforms.
