The Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC) has penalized two Global System for Mobile communications
(GSM) companies over unregistered SIM cards found on their networks, reports ITRealms.
NCC stipulates a fine of N200,000
for every pre-registered SIM card found to be active on any telecom operator's
network in Nigeria.
As it is, Globacom and Etisalat
Nigeria received a total of N14.4
million penalty for failure to disconnect unregistered SIMs on their networks, ITRealms investigation on NCC site revealed.
According to the NCC, its monitoring
team discovered 37 pre-registered SIM cards on the Globacom network and 35 such
cards on the Etisalat network.
The fines must be paid by September
7 or they will start to increase by N100,000 per day. Globacom is to pay N7.4
million, while Etisalat will cough out N7 million.
