The Managing Director
of Coscharis Technologies, Mr. Sunday Emomine Mukoro has urged the Federal
Government to declare a state of emergency in technical education, reports
ITRealms.
Speaking in Lagos, Mr.
Mukoro said by taking his advice, the Federal Government would be making
Nigeria competitive in the 21st Century.
He also said, the call was
based on the fact that the pace of technology development, at the global stage,
is so fast that it has rendered insignificant the yearly meagre budgets, in the
past years, of less than 1 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which
has affected the entire education sector.
Mukoro stressing that
with the change mantra of the present administration, it is crucial that technical
education should be radically and generously funded.
The MD Coscharis Tech,
highlighted the fact that there are persistent complaints that the products of
the Nigerian educational system are unable to meet the expectations of
corporate Nigeria.
“Industries and
commercial institutions have vacancies that educated Nigerians are not equipped
to occupy especially in the areas of technical cum engineering and technologies
thereby consistently depending on foreign firms for such services,” he lamented,
adding that application of irrelevant curriculum and analogue teaching methods,
were some of the reasons for the under-achievement in the educational sector.
He further decried that
currently, the education outcomes have failed to match the national
expectations especially in manufacturing, maintaining that there is an urgent
national need to redefine and reposition technical and engineering education so
as to transform this nation from consumption to production.
Nigeria, Mukoro pointed
out, must harness her vast human and material resources from the point of view
of achieving rapid results from technical and engineering education.
“Thus a legislated state
of emergency in technical education would be an apt response to long standing
prejudices in the Nigerian education system, which, have forced the status of
an underdog on technical education,” he said.
Mr. Mukoro revealed
that funding for this state of emergency could be obtained by directing the
Educational Trust Fund (ETF), to invest 50 per cent of its budget on technical
education for the next five years.
