The Nigeria
Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has reeled out plans to commemorate
its 10th year since establishment on March 28, 2006, including exhibition
for the Domain Name System (DNS) industry, reports ITRealms.
The
chairman, Board of Trustees (iBoT), Deacon Chima Onyekwere made this disclosure
in Lagos accompanied by some NIRA Executive Board members led by Rev. Sunday
Folayan, said that this exhibition would be mounted by NiRA accredited registrars,
resellers, web hosting companies and software developers and has been slated
for March 12, 2016 in Lagos.
Other
programmes for a decade anniversary comprise of a youth empowerment and wealth creation
programme, scheduled for March 19, 2016 with conferment of .ng Ambassadors,
launch of .ng Scouts programme, .ng Social Media activities, selfie contest and
climaxed with the climax with the .ng 10th Anniversary Gala and
Award Night on the 2nd of April 2016.
Onyekwere
recalls that when stakeholders within the Nigerian Internet industry got
together to adopt its constitution, under the stewardship of an Interim Board
of Trustees (iBoT) before an election was immediately conducted which saw to
the pioneer BOT led by Dr. Isaac Odeyemi as the Chairman.
The
BoT, he said, thereafter conducted elections for the pioneer Executive Board
(EBoD), with the late Engr Ndukwe Kalu emerging as the pioneer NIRA President.
“The
late Kalu was succeeded by Mrs Mary Uduma, our immediate Past President who
completed her term of office in 2015. The current President of NIRA is Reverend
Sunday Folayan,” he explained.
The
BOT chairman further said that the transfer of the appropriate management of
the .ng national resource was coordinated by the National Information
Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on behalf of the Federal government of
Nigeria.
Also
speaking, NIRA president, Rev. Folayan said they are passionate about local
content development and we believe that great ideas begin with a simple
inspiration and thereafter become stories that entertain, educate and capture
the imagination of the audience.
“With
our passion in mind, we will launch the NiRA .ng selfie and animation
competitions to create compelling local contents that inspire. We encourage
Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunities offered by these competitions,”
he said.
