Kachikwu restructuring plans trigger PENGASSAN, NUPENG strike

Following the pronouncement Tuesday by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) will be restructured into seven independent divisions, the oil workers under the aegis of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have put down their tools, reports ITRealms.

The restructuring of NNPC, ITRealms gathered would affect the downstream, gas and power, refineries, ventures, corporate planning and services, as well as finance and accounts.

Both PENGASSAN and NUPENG, ITRealms reports promptly Tuesday night put thir heads together to organize the strike for Wednesday, saying they were not consulted before the pronouncement and likely exercise which no doubt would affect the workforce.

The acting General Secretary of PENGASSAN, Lumumba Okugbawa told correspondents that the workers will not resume activities until invited to deliberate on the planned restructuring the minister and his team.

According to Okugbawa, with such a massive decision, a lot of things will be affected, particularly its implication on NNPC workers. 

“We are unaware of what is happening. It is not fair that the workers are hearing about the restructuring in the media just like every other person. He is just creating unnecessary confusion in the polity,” Okugbawa warned.

ITRealms gathered that as expected, the strike by both unions grounded activities in several places, especially the power supply and lack of petrol across the nation with long queue seen in major cities.
