The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to beam his anti-corruption searchlight on the sports sector by investigating how the N2.7 billion disbursed for the All Africa Games in Congo in 2015 was expended, and release fund for Rio 2016 preparation, reports ITRealms.
SWAN at the end of its first congress in 2016 communique signed by a three-man drafting committee, chaired by Olawale Ajimotokan, and made up of Ralph Ekpang and Clinton Agbo, also urged President Buhari to quickly release money for Nigeria’s preparation towards Rio 2016 as the country’s athletes are capable of winning medals at the Games, if there is adequate preparation.
The body of sports writers appealed to the President to beam his anti-corruption searchlight on the sports sector by investigating how the money that was disbursed for the All Africa Games in Congo in 2015 was expended.
Minister of Youth and Sports, they said, should present and implement his blueprint for sports development, rather than grandstanding and gallivanting all over the world.
SWAN also said that government should have leveraged on the success of Team Nigeria, which was a deliberate, corporate-driven initiative, geared towards generating fund that also ensured the money released was used on funding local and foreign training tours for athletes ahead of major international sporting events.
In addition, SWAN wants the government to explore alternative means in funding sports including the National Lottery Funds and Sports Development Funds to finance to augment its budgetary allocations.
"It should also consider making tax concessions and other generous rebate to corporations that sponsor sports," SWAN advised.
