Telecom expert sends SOS to Buhari over NCC governing board

President Muhammadu Buhari has been sent a save our soul (SOS) request to urgently constitute the governing board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), reports ITRealms.

This call was made at the weekend by telecom expert, Mr. Titi Omo-Ettu in a council report tagged, Communication Technology Industry Development, lamented that after close to a year of the new administration, there is no governing board at NCC.

He advised the Association Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) to urgently advise the Minister of Communication appropriately for onward attention of Mr. President with regards to this fact.

“I suggest we advise the Hon Minister to clamour that the President constitutes one soonest so investors can continue to respect our regulation,” Omo-Ettu said.

He emphasised on the qualification of ‘The Commissioner’ saying its critical, arguing that this should be seen as precedent on potential commissioners professional skills in relation to communication technology issues above the constitutional requirement of national spread and understandable political patronage.

On subsidy for the industry, Omo-Ettu, said it is commendable that the industry enjoys the benefit of a Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF).

More gratifying, he said, is the observation that the fund’s secretariat has modified its working focus to see ‘unserved’ and ‘under-served’ communities from the perspective of broadband internet presence.

Also, he said, the fund requires a Board of Directors that is made up of members who have sufficient expertise and experience to guide the mandate of the fund.
