For the ailing Nigeria’s economy to recover quickly and compete
with other global economies, the efficient deployment of broadband internet
connectivity across Nigeria must be given priority, as only effective rollout
of broadband would drive businesses and enable Nigerians to deliver the best of
service at all times.
Coordinator,
the Nigeria ICT Impact CEO forum [NIICF] and Africa Digital Awards [ADA], Mr.
Tayo Adewusi, in a press statement made available to ITRealms in Lagos, said it
is imperative for the federal government, regulators, and industry stakeholders
to discuss and map out creative ways to push internet broadband deeper in order
to resuscitate the ailing economy.
He affirmed
that if Nigeria’s economy would leap frog the status of being classified as a
developing economy, and catch up with the rest of the world, then “effective
and efficient broadband rollout” must be implemented across the country.
“Broadband is an essential tool for empowering people. Government should
create an environment that nurtures the technological and service innovation
and trigger positive change in business processes. This service can be deployed
to aid the ailing economy”, he said.
“We have done poorly in
broadband penetration with the availability of undersea international cable at
our shores with over 10 tetra bytes per second (TBS), which include SAT-3,
MainOne, Glo1 and others have brought a glut in fibre capacity. This is what
would occupy the attention of ICT stakeholders at the NIICF & ADA event”
slated for Friday August 26, 2016 at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja,
Lagos.
The challenge, he concurred, would be how to transport the
huge broadband capacity inland, as there is an obvious absence of “efficient
distribution and dearth of last mile connection”.
Themed How Broadband Deployment Can Impact Nigeria’s
Economic Recovery, the event would precede the fifth edition of the Africa
Digital Awards (ADA). He said distinguished corporate and personalities who
have leveraged on the potency of information and communication technology [ICT]
would also be honoured by the organisers.
Expected at the event are the Minister of Communications
Barrister Adebayo Shittu, who would chair the occasion, while the keynote speakers
would be EVC/CEO of Nigeria Communications Commission [NCC], Prof. Umar
Danbatta and Ag. DG of NITDA, Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
Others are MD/CEO of NIGCOMSAT, Abimbola Alale, MD/CEO of
MainOne Funke Opeke; MD/CEO of Phase3 Telecom, Stanley Jegede while Governor of
the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; Governor of Lagos State, Mr.
Akinwunmi Ambode, among others.
