Technology, key to future development – Danbatta

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta has declared that technology holds the key to future development, reports ITRealms.

He made this declaration at the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) Nigeria Coalition meeting held in Lagos on Monday at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Danbatta who was represented at the occasion by the Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, also noted that the role of the Commission in promoting this technology is very clear as defined by law and pursued by a talented workforce of an impeccable zeal.

Equally, he said, that NCC and A4AI has common vision and dreams, stressing that one of the functions enshrined in the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, is granting and renewing communications licences.

This, he said, empowers NCC to issue licences and monitor compliance with licence terms and conditions as per rollout, service deployment and tariff. In all this the user which A4AI seeks to empower with affordable internet occupies a central place.

Further, he said, the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, mandates NCC to midwife and nurture an industry that will accommodate the needs of subscribers through the deployment of necessary technologies and affordable services, including internet services.

“I am aware that your organization is very passionate about Internet and Broadband for all,” he said.

Danbatta equally said that facilitation of broadband penetration enjoys top priority in his 8-Point agenda recently released to industry stakeholders.

EVC listed other point in the agenda to comprise to: Improve Quality of Service, Optimize Usage and Benefits of Spectrum, Promote ICT Innovation and Investment Opportunities, Facilitate Strategic Collaboration and Partnership, Protect and Empower Consumers, Promote Fair Competition and Inclusive growth, and Ensure Regulatory Excellence and Operational Efficiency.
