Monsignor Donatus Edet Akpan installed Bishop of Ogoja Diocese

The St. Thomas Cathedral Ogoja in Cross River State was agog Friday, as the Bishop designate, Monsignor Donatus Edet Akpan, was formally installed as the Catholic Bishop of Ogoja Diocese, reports ITRealms.

Correspondent reports that the installation was attended by over 30 Bishops from across the country.

ITRealms recalls that Monsignor Donatus Edet Akpan was on Sunday, April 9, 2017, named the Bishop of Ogoja Catholic Diocese by His Holiness, Pope Francis.

Until his latest appointment as Bishop of Ogoja Diocese, Rev. Monsignor Donatus Edet Akpan, was the parish priest in-charge of the Holy Rosary Church, Wuse Abuja Archdiocese.

According to the Secretary General, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) Rev Fr. Ralph Madu, confirmed to ITRealms that Bishop Donatus Edet Akpan, was born on 7th August 1952 at Ikot Ada Utor, Essien Udim Local Govt Area of Akwa Ibom State. 

He studied Philosophy and Theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary in 1975 and was ordained priest on 12th October 1985 at St Anne’s Cathedral Ifuho, Ikot Ekpene by Most Rev Fitzgibon of Port Harcourt Diocese at the instance of His Eminence, Dominic Cardinal Ekandem.

Bishop Akpan also did his higher studies at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and obtained a Master’s Degree in Theology and a postgraduate Diploma in Education (PDGE).

The newly installed Bishop Akpan, ITRealms gathered was in 1989 was appointed the Administrator of the Independent Mission of Abuja by late Dominic Cardinal Ekandem. He has been the Parish Priest in several parishes in the Archdiocese of Abuja, and also the Rector, SS Simon and Jude Seminary, Kuje, Abuja.


ITRealms gathered that the appointment and subsequent installation of Bishop Akpan of Ogoja Diocese, came three years since the last Bishop in the diocese.
