The rally, ITREALMS gathered is coming under the project ‘Promoting Accountability in Nigeria through Engagement and Implementation of the Open Government Partnership (OGP)’ with funding from the MacArthur Foundation.
The rally is essentially to create awareness about the Open Government Partnership (OGP), the 14 commitment areas of the Nigerian OGP National Action Plan and the need for Governments at the Sub-National Levels to sign up to the process.
A statement released by the Programmes Coordinator of the Centre, Mr. Uchenna Arisukwu, stated that the rally will attract stakeholders from all sectors like Civil Society, State Government Officials, Private Sector Players, Students of various institutions of learning and the general public from Akwa Ibom and indeed all the other South-South states of Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Edo and Delta.
The Open Government Partnership is an international multi-stakeholder initiative which was launched on 20th September 2011 to provide an international platform for domestic reformers to make their governments more open, accountable and responsive to citizens. The partnership is governed by four key principles: Transparency, Accountability, Citizens Participation and Technology.

OGP, he said, brings together government and civil society champions who believe governments are more effective and credible when they are open to public input and oversight. OGP brings together governments and civil society organizations as true partners at both the national and international level. At the national level, governments work with civil society organizations to develop and implement their OGP national action plan. Also, OGP introduces a domestic policy mechanism through which the government and civil society can have an ongoing dialogue.
Nigeria joined the OGP process as the 70th member and the 12th African nation and has committed itself to open contracting, an approach that ensures transparency frameworks are applied to procurement systems in obligated countries.

The National Plan which is a 2-year document that contains 14 commitments in 4 thematic areas namely: Fiscal Transparency, Access to Information, Anti-Corruption and Citizens Engagement and Empowerment was developed, submitted and adopted at the OGP Global summit in Paris in December 2017.
He also said that Civil Society actors and Government MDAs are working across the various commitments and thematic areas of the NAP to ensure that the NAP is achieved by December 2019. So far, about 9 states in the country have signed up and domesticated the OGP in their states. These states are Kaduna, Kano, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Niger, Jigawa and Edo states.
The statement further enjoined well-meaning citizens to engage the Centre LSD OGP Project through the various social media channels.
