FOI: Media Rights Agenda offers pro-bono litigation support for journalists, media houses – ITREALMS

The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) is offering pro-bono litigation support and assistance to journalists and media organizations in pursuit of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.

The Executive Director, Media Rights Agenda, Edetaen Ojo disclosed this to ITREALMS on Monday in Lagos, saying they are ready to assist journalists and media organization who may be entangled in exploring the FOI Act.

“This is to inform you that Media Rights Agenda is providing litigation support and assistance to journalists and media organizations that require it in freedom of information or freedom of expression matters,” he declared.

Pointing out that they are working with a network of lawyers across the country who provide pro bono legal assistance while MRA covers the administrative costs in conducting such litigation on behalf of journalists or media organizations that request the assistance.

“Should you or your organization require litigation support to challenge a refusal by any public institution to provide you with information under the Freedom of Information Act or should your right to freedom of expression be threatened or violated and you require litigation support to protect or defend your rights related to your work as a media practitioner, please feel free to contact us at: legal@mediarightsagenda.org,” he advised.

According to him besides support to challenge denial of information requests, “should you be interested in enforcing compliance with other provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, such as the proactive publications obligations of public institutions or the duty on them to submit annual reports to the Attorney-General of the Federation, we can also work with you to undertake litigation in such areas.”
