'You pray for death' ready for launch - ITREALMS

The Human Rights Watch has expressed readiness for the formal launch of the latest report on 'You Pray for Death: Trafficking of Women and Girls in Nigeria,' reports ITREALMS.

The launch,
ITREALMS gathered will commence on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at the Chelsea Hotel in Abuja.

Nigerian has one of the highest numbers of human trafficking victims in Africa. While Nigerian authorities have taken some important steps to address this problem, they are failing to provide much-needed support, and are violating trafficking survivors’ human rights by detaining them in government-run shelters.

This report, based on 76 interviews with trafficking survivors and experts, provides detailed accounts of how human trafficking operates in Nigeria, and what happens to survivors when they escape captivity by traffickers. Human Rights Watch finds that the nightmare doesn’t end with escape, as survivors are left to struggle with serious health conditions, social exclusion, and poverty.

Human Rights Watch calls on Nigerian authorities to work urgently to improve assistance and services for internally identified and repatriated human trafficking survivors, including by providing comprehensive and long-term care, ending all detention of survivors in shelters and strengthening oversight over shelters and assistance programs.
