The Beninese Universal Acceptance Ambassador, Mr. Yazid Akanho has declared that the principle of Universal Acceptance (UA) is to ensure that all domain names and electronic mail (email) addresses are treated fairly, reports ITREALMS.
Akanho who spoke recently to the Internationalised Domain Names (IDN) in its World Report, noted that this core value will avail all equipment, systems and applications to accept, validate, register, process and display them correctly and consistently.
He also said that the overall awareness of Universal Acceptance, especially among the technical community is low, noting that sometimes, one sees how frustrated and surprised people are when they discover the issues for the first time.
“That is why the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG) was set up to fill this gap,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to get involved, declaring “… Each one has a role in successfully making the Internet and our information systems UA ready: governments, software designers and publishers, developers, system administrators, and managers among others.”
In addition, he lamented that some of the Internet’s technical giants are not UA ready, whereas billions of people are using their services every day, stressing that there are many people who have their email addresses reject simply because they were not well processed.
He emphasized that each of the stakeholders has specific role to play, and its not always easy to maintain a level of commitment to meet this challenge.
“Fortunately, there are encouraging signs, with local initiatives starting to show good results,” he said.
