The Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Anambra State Chapter has declared a member, Barrister Matthew Onwuasoanya, missing, reports ITREALMS.
The 49-year-old reporter with the State owned Anambra Newspaper and Printing Corporation, publishers of National Light Newspaper was last seen on 29 May 2020.
A press statement by the Chairman, Anambra State Council of NUJ, Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi said that Matthew, tall and fair in complexion has not been seen either in the office or his residence in Ngodo, Nise in Awka South LGA since then.
He quoted the Managing Director of National Light Newspaper, Sir Chuka Nnabuife as saying, "we have been expecting the missing Onwuasoanya at work until his only brother, Mr. Oliver Onwuasoanya arrived our office on 8 June, 2020 to tell us that they have been searching for him.
"Thereafter, we commenced actions on the search for him, while his brother has lodged complaints at the Central Police Station in Awka and also with the Commissioner of Police".
According to the statement, neighbours at his residence told Onwuasoanya's brother that two vehicles, a white Hilux truck and a Highlander were seen around at about 2am on Saturday, 30 May, 2020. The men who dressed in what looked like security outfit and bearing guns then whiskey him away.
The State NUJ Chairman then implored all media organisations in the country to use their good office in helping for the search and rescue of the missing journalist.
“The development if not tackled, may bear a big dent on the image of media practice in Anambra State," he lamented.
