Fresh facts are gradually emerging on why the Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), finally removed Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, as the vice-chancellor of the school, reports ITREALMS.
This follows the meeting of the council on Wednesday, at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission, Abuja.
Sources close to the meeting venue, informed ITREALMS that in attendance were some 11 out of the 12 council members, including the VC, said the sack was with immediate effect.
ITREALMS gathered that majority of members present voted in favour of Ogundipe's removal.
Prof Ogundipe, ITREALMS also gathered, was accused of financial impropriety and gross misconduct.
Confirming this to ITREALMS, Mikhail Mumuni, the media adviser to the chairman of the governing council, Chief Wale Babalakin, declined, however further comments, noting that only the registrar of the university could provide details of the development.
In a notice to the general public on the removal of the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council Oladejo Azeez, Esq, dated, Wednesday August 12, 2020, and made available to ITREALMS, said the removal is "with immediate effect."
"This decision was based on Council's investigation of serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness and abuse of office against Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe.
Further, ITREALMS recalled that the disagreement between the governing council and the management led by Ogundipe reached ugly crescendo in March, when the usually week-long 2020 convocation was cancelled just before it even started.
Equally, ITREALMS gathered that the cancellation was ordered by the Nigerian universities’ regulatory body, the NUC, in adherence to a directive by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, in relation to the petition against the vice-chancellor by the council chairman, alleging Prof Ogundipe failed to share crucial details on the ceremony with the council.
The exchanges between the two officials were condemned by relevant stakeholders, including graduands, parents, the alumni and staff.
