The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Umar Garba Danbatta has said that the Fifth Generation (5G) network will accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country, reports ITREALMS.
Danbatta in his address to a one-day capacity building for telecom sector reporters hosted by the NCC in collaboration with the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) National Headquarters in Lagos on Wednesday at CitiHeight Hotels, Ikeja.
He also decried the raising wave of misinformation especially on the efficacy of 5G.
Danbatta, who was represented by a delegation led by the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs (DPA), Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, stressed that contrary to these misinformation, 5G will accelerate the delivery and attainment of SDGs in the country when deployed.
He maintained that currently NCC has not concluded on the deployment but has been consulting with stakeholders to ensure their buy-in and readiness to tap into this new technology.
In addition, he promised to partner with NITRA in continuously empowering its membership to gender factual and correct information dissemination of the commission’s activities.
In his welcome remarks, NITRA president, Mr. Chike Onwuegbuchi, applauded NCC for the partnership and specifically on the capacity building.
While urging for such capacity building to be more frequent, Onwuegbuchi assured of NITRA commitment to ensure delivery of the association’s mandate, moreso on educating the Nigeria’s populace with right and accurate information for the telecom consumers ultimate benefit.
At the event, Engr. Maigana Gidado of NCC spoke to ‘Transmission Networks’ while Dr. Declan Okpaleke shared insight on “Tips for doing good news, features and investigative journalism” and the Dean, Faculty of Computing, AirForce Institute of Technology Kaduna, Prof. Godfrey Onyiagha, gave insightful presentation on Emerging Technologies as well as on 5G and National Development.
