Nigerian-born Igbo, Kene Ilochonwu, has been elected as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta in Canada, reports ITREALMS.
ITREALMS gathered is the first black to be elected into the Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta.
Kene’s election came alongside 19 others, whose tenure would commence on February 25, 2021 after he scored 1026 votes.
The Law Society of Alberta regulates the legal profession in the public interest by promoting and enforcing a high standard of professional and ethical conduct by Alberta lawyers.
Confirming this to ITREALMS , the Minister of Justice and Solicitor-General, Government of Alberta Provincial Secretary and Keeper of the Great Seal, Mr. Kelechi Madu, congratulated all the newly elected Benchers.
“I want to congratulate all the newly elected Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta. I also offer my appreciation to all those who put their names forward.
“In particular, I want to congratulate my friend and fellow Nigerian-born Igbo, Kene Ilochonwu, for being the first Black person elected as a Bencher to the Law Society of Alberta.,” he said.
Madu further commended the province and her people, the Law Society of Alberta and Alberta’s lawyers for creating this enabling environment.
ITREALMS equally gathered that the Law Society of Alberta derives her authority from the Legal Profession Act of Alberta and set out standards through a Code of Conduct and the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta.
Additionally, ITREALMS gathered that the Law Society views its core purpose as an active obligation and duty to uphold and protect the public interest in the delivery of legal services.
2020 Bencher Election Results
ITREALMS reports that of the 10,503 eligible voters, 4,854 lawyers (46 per cent of the profession) were valid vote.
