The remains of the former Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Ogbuefi Edwin Uyaemem Achum has been laid to rest last weekend, reports ITREALMS.
This followed a requiem mass in his compound at Ezenwanyi Street Off Awka-North Local Government Secretariat in Achalla, Anambra State on Friday, January 8, 2021.
His funeral which was well-attended saw crème de la crème from all works of life, especially Anambra State in attendance including the Member of State House of Assembly, Hon. John Nwokoye, who doubles as Onowu Achalla, an Abuja-based public relations consultant, Mr. Ginger Ekeh, editor-in-chief of ITREALMS Media inc, Mr. Remmy Nweke, who also is the chairman, Board of Trustees of Times Journalism Alumni Association (TJAA), management and staff of BusinessPlus led by the editor, Mrs. Esther Omame, Health Editor of New Telegram, Mrs Apolonia Adeyemi, in-laws and friends among others.
He died at the age of 77 in Lagos on Friday, November 6, 2021.
Born in Achalla, Awka-North Local Government Area of Anambra State in March 15, 1943, Chief Achum completed his primary educartion at St. Paul's primary school (now central school) and attended ETC Nimo (1953 to 1954; ETC Ihiala (1955 to 1956 and St Charles TTC Onitsha between 1960 and 1962.
He served as a teacher in various schools from 1963 to 11967 when the NIgerian civil war broke out.
ITREALMS gathered that after the war, he worked briefly with the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) before taking a study leave in 1971 to study Sociology and Anthropology at UNN and graduated with honours in 1974.
He equally undertook the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, carrying out his primary assignment as a teacher at Irepo Grammar School in Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State between September 1974 and July 1975.
Also ITREALMS gathered that thereafter, he enlisted in the Customs as Assistant Preventive Officer (APO2) nowadays known as Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) and climaxed with attaining the position of Comptroller of Customs until his retirement in 2003.
Chief Achum also known as Ozumba 1 of Achalla had an illustrious career cutting serving in various commands including Lagos and Nasarawa.
A lifelong devoted Christian, Chief Achum was a philanthropist, and community leader; notable for dedication to the well-being of those around and improvement of society at large and received recognitions from the likes of St. Cecelia's Choir and Catholic Men Organisation (CMO) of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Lagos.
