Breaking: Destiny Amana, Ogochukwu, Ajiboye Mayowa join NIRA Board - ITREALMS

The President of the Nigeria Internet Group and chief executive of Icecool Contract, Mr. Destiny Amana has been elected into the board of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) among two others, reports ITREALMS.
Amana, ITREALMS gathered is joining the board newly alongside Messrs Frank Ifeanyi Ogochukwu and Ajiboye Mayowa, while Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata and Dr. Eugene Ohu were also elected into the officers of the board as Treasurer and Financial Secretary respectively.


Their emergence came from the elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NIRA which held virtually on Thursday, April 29, 2021 in compliance to COVID-19 protocols and presided over by NIRA President, Mr. Mohammed Rudman.

The new board members, ITREALMS gathered would remain in office for the next two years.

According to the Executive Secretary of NiRA, Mrs. Edith Udeagu who stood in for the Election Committee, a total of 117 members were eligible to vote but 92 seized the opportunity to perform their civic responsibilities.

The AGM also saw the two pioneering members of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Dr. Isaac Odeyemi of Debis Computers and former president of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) and software guru, Dr. Chris Nwannenna, retiring from the BoT to pave the way for reduction in the newly adopted constitution of NIRA.

The new constitution requires that BoT members currently being led by Chief Chima Onyekwere be reduced to 7 including the representative of the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and NIRA President.

ITREALMS recalls that NIRA is a not-for-profit, non-governmental self-regulatory body established by the order of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to the Internet Community to manage Nigeria's Country Code Top Level Domain (.ng ccTLD).

Further, ITREALMS reports that the principal objectives of NIRA include to be the administrator of the .ngTLD and its associated sub-Level domain names; maintain and promote the operational stability security, reliability and utility of the .ngTLD; ensure cost-effective administration of the .ngTLD; develop and establish a policy framework for the development and administration of the .ngTLD including - rules governing the operations of sub-level domain registries.

These rules comprised the creation and allocation of sub-level domains; governing the accreditation of registrars and registry operations; governing the registration of names within sub-level domains and access to sub-level domain registries and; ensuring that registrars have equal access to sub-level domain registries.

In addition, ITREALMS reports that NIRA manages the operation of technical functions including that of the primary and secondary .ngTLD name servers; files for sub-level domains; and a searchable database containing information on registrations within the .ngTLD; Liaise with national and international bodies on issues relating to the development and administration of domain name system.
NIRA, ITREALMS gathered is to also “Establish appropriate complaints handling and dispute resolution processes in order to provide for conciliation or redress of grievances on matter associated with the administration of the .ngTLD; and promote the use and growth of Internet in Nigeria with widespread adoption of the .ngTLD in a secure and reliable manner.”
