Nigerians have been advised to see the current ongoing mandatory registration of National Identity Number (NIN) with the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) as similar to the use of Social Security Number in other climes, reports
ITREALMS.
This advice was contained in a communique from the May meeting of the leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (MoCDE) on Tuesday.

The meeting held virtually was presided over by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami and attended by the Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Adeolu Akande, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta and the Director-General/CEO NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Azeez.

The meeting rose with the citing of Sections 27 and 29 of NIMC Act 2007, which ITREALMS gathered provided for for the mandatory use of NIN for accessing several government services.

A press statement jointly endorsed and made available to ITREALMS by Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde and Head, Corporate Communications at NIMC, Mr. Kayode Adegoke, pointed out that there are similarities of the current exercise to the use of Social Security Number (SSN) in the United States of America (USA).

They also cited the instance of the National Insurance Number (NIN) in the United Kingdom, both of which
ITREALMS gathered are used to access public services separately.

“This is similar to the use of Social Security Number and National Insurance Number for accessing services in the United States of America and the United Kingdom respectively,” part of the statement read.

The session equally disclosed the approval of extension of the deadline for NIN-SIM linkage in the country to about 30th of June, 2021, as requested by undisclosed stakeholders.
