Telecommunications regulator in the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has clarified the absence of constitutional power to prosecute any alleged offenders of Twitter suspension order issued by the Federal Government (FG) reports ITREALMS.
Director of Public Affairs at the Commission, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, said the agency lacks the power to arrest or prosecute alleged offender.
Although, ITREALMS gathered that DPA also noted, NCC would provide relevant collaboration to and with the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to prosecute Twitter ban offenders when necessary.
“The NCC is a regulator. It is not within our power to arrest or prosecute. Based on our statement, we limited ourselves based on the order given to us by the government, which was to instruct the operators to disconnect, which was what we did. So, the other aspects are not within our purview,” he clarified.
ITREALMS recalled that NCC is an independent regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria, created under Decree number Decree 75 by the [Federal Military Government of Nigeria] on 24 November 1992.
