Exclusive! Nigerian academia jostles for N14m grant on 5G research innovations - ITREALMS

Academics in the Nigerian tertiary institutions are now jostling over the N14 million research grant for the 2021 telecommunications-based research innovations by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), reports ITREALMS.
This, ITREALMS gathered was contained in a Request for Proposal (RFP) published on Monday, July 5, 2021.
ITREALMS also gathered that in this call, NCC indicated was in pursuant to supporting among other things telecommunications-based research innovations from tertiary institutions in the country that are practical, locally realisable and have clear potential of contributing to the development of the industry.

"The Commission invites proposals from academics in tertiary institutions that have feasible research ideas capable of replacing or enhancing foreign technologies in the telecommunications ecosystem in Nigeria. Its envisaged that the initiative will help build capacity in the tertiary institutions and promote Nigeria's contributions to the pool of technologies in use in the communications industry,” the RFP personally endorsed by the Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta read.

Areas of research, ITREALMS gathered, include 5G deployment, innovative clean energy technology, advanced method of Quality of Service (QoS) cum Quality of experience Management and Test Mechanism, Internet of Things (IoT), Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology, Monitoring and Localisation of Drones.

ITREALMS reports that for further information, NCC invited interested persons to visit the grant page; www.ncc.gov.ng/research-grant-2021, to access the topics in each of the areas of research as well as detail structure of the proposal.

Requirements, ITREALMS equally gathered, that interested researchers are required to submit their proposals which must come from teaching academics in Nigeria's tertiary institutions and have a two-page executive summary, one page of which will be on the research proposal and must include relevance of the research to the telecommunications industry, proposed solution to identified challenges, novelty of concept and research output (prototype) and the second page would be on the project time line, deliverables and detailed cost schedule.

Submission, ITREALMS reports must have a copy sent electronic copy on a USB in PDF format and two hard copies of their research proposals on or before 18th August 2021 to the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, NCC, Maitama, Abuja and with the attention of "Director, Research and Development."

“The project cost should not exceed a maximum of N14,000,000 with the Commission reserving the right to review this maximum amount,” NCC stated.
