The excessive consumption and addiction of illicit drugs by the youths have negative consequences in any society, negates their future, reports ITREALMS.

ITREALMS gathered this year’s focus centred on sensitizing stakeholders including residents, parents, teachers, students, as well as religious organisation, community leaders and individuals on the need to take a pro-active steps to reduce drastically if not stop the menace of drug abuse.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman, Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Honorable Olabisi Balogun, urged parents to address the issue of drug abuse which starts from mis-use of drugs, peer pressure and the need to give more care and attention in training the 'boy-child' not only the 'girl-child.'

In his keynote, the Chief host and legislator representing Lagos Island (II) Constituency at the Lagos House of Assembly, Honourable Olanrewaju Sulaimon Afinni stated that drug abuse has been a source of grave concern to the leadership and members of the House in the state, for which they have exhaustively debated and passed various resolutions to curb the menace.
Afinni, ITREALMS also reported, decried the revelation of experts who have established the nexus between the menace of drug abuse and rising incidences of violent crimes in the country such as kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities.
He enjoined all stakeholders to work in unison with the government by showing more concern about the youth's welfare for the common good of the society.
Representing the Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Emmanuel Udeagha, said that the war against drug abuse is an encompassing one in which all stakeholders must be involved; which should be nib in the bud, so as not to jeopardize the youth's future.
According to Mr. Udeagha, 40 per cent of Nigerian youths are addicted to several types of drugs such as heroine, marijuana, opiods, crystal meth, Indian hemp, codeine and tramadol which needs to be controlled.

In addition, Udeagha tasked parents to go back to the drawing board, create time for the younger ones, check their phones often (browsing history) in order to checkmate their excesses and look out for some signs including restlessness, unusual sweating, dehydration and excessive heartbeat as a pointer in detecting drug addicts to name a few.
