The challenges posed by improper disposal of electrical and electronics equipment was the main focus of this year's ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue, especially as the nation celebrates 20 years of the Global System for Mobile (GSM) Communications, reports ITREALMS.

ITREALMS Media group, Mr. Remmy Nweke made this call in his welcome address at the 2021 ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue held Thursday at the Welcome Centre Hotels Lagos.
He pointed out the Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) such as mobile phones, computers, TV-sets, and fridges have among other electronic devices become the fastest growing waste streams across the globe.
Nigeria population, Nweke said, is particularly burdened by the WEEE with estimated 1.1 million tonnes of e-waste annually arising from both local, imported Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) under the guise of second hand or fairly used devices.
He also said that as the active internet data subscriptions across all the Nigerian Mobile Network Operators increases these devices are expected to grow into million tonnes of e-waste of mobile devices by end of 2021, however proactive actions to tackle e-Waste needs to be backed by sound policy and regulatory environment.
This, he said, makes it imperative for stakeholders to increase support on efforts at creating awareness on eWaste management in the county.

This he further said the award winning Media outlet is doing under its flagship ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue and pledged they will continue their efforts and enjoined other stakeholders to join hands with ITREALMS to make the strives sustainable.
